The humble fridge is a standard in almost every home. That’s why it’s a big deal if your breaks.

Over 10 million refrigerators are sold in the US every year. Almost a quarter of American homes have two, and people even like to show them off on social media with the hashtag “#fridge”.

Because it’s such an important appliance, don’t wait until it’s too late and you need extensive fridge repairs. Here are five common refrigerator problems to look for.

1. Your Refrigerator isn’t Cold Enough

Ideally, your fridge should be between 37 to 41 degrees in order to keep food fresh. If it feels warmer than that, you could have a problem.

This fix can be as simple as adjusting the fridge thermostat or unblocking the vents to improve cold air flow. Check to see that the fridge is getting enough power or clean up the coils in the back to help it work better.

2. It’s Leaking Water on the Floor

Nothing is worse than stepping on a cold puddle of water on the kitchen floor and soaking your socks. Leaking water isn’t great, but isn’t always difficult to fix.

Check to see that your ice maker and water dispenser aren’t blocked up. If the water line is broken, shut it off until you get a replacement part.

If that isn’t it, check your drainage valve. It might be blocked and backing up.

3. Your Fridge is Noisy

If your fridge is making strange sounds, it’s struggling to work. This ends up raising your electric bill.

Check to see that the condenser coils in the back aren’t clogged up.

Turn your fridge off and wipe the coils with a soft cloth to remove any dirt and dust.

Didn’t fix the issue? You might need a new electronics control board.

4. No Water or Ice is Coming Out

Your water dispenser and ice maker have filters that need to be changed regularly.

Replace the filter and see if the dispenser has any built up minerals or debris.

The valve might be blocked, too, Make sure that it can open and close and replace it if necessary.

5. Your Fridge is Too Cold

This is the opposite of the first problem we discussed. A fridge that’s too cold can also damage all of your food and cost you big bucks.

See if your thermostat is defective. You should hear a clicking noise when you turn it all the way up.

You might have an issue with the temperature control board. You’ll have to have someone run a test to see if there’s a problem with it.

Unfortunately, this one can be tricky to diagnose and repair. You might have to call in the pros.
