All AC units need regular servicing to maintain longevity. We outline the basic central AC maintenance required for keeping your AC unit in check.

Three-quarters of all homes in the US have air conditioning units.

A fully-working AC system makes your home or business the perfect temperature, even when the mercury is rising outside.

The trouble is, AC systems can go wrong. You could find yourself sweating on a big repair bill or even a brand new system.

Read on as we take a look at how to keep on top of your central AC maintenance throughout the year.

Every Month

There are some maintenance tasks that you should try to perform at least once a month.

Check Outside Units

You feel the benefit of the cool inside your home, but a lot of the magic happens outside.

The outside units are where the refrigerant that has taken heat from your home condenses and the heat is passed into the air outside.

You need to make sure that these units are kept clean and free from debris. Give them a quick check over once a month to keep them in good order.

Inspect Air Filters

Over time, dust and other particles will clog up your air filters. This is their job; to keep this junk from entering your AC system.

Once a month, make a quick check of your air filters to make sure that they’re not getting clogged up. A quick clean should be enough for the first few months.

Every Quarter

These tasks should be taken on once every three months or so.

Change Air Filters

Keeping your air filters clean will help, but if you want your AC system to work at maximum efficiency, we would recommend changing the filters every three months or so.

Your AC system won’t have to work as hard to circulate cool air, so you’ll save on your energy costs.

Adjust Your Thermostat

As the season changes, so do the temperature in your home.

Make sure that you adjust your thermostat accordingly.

You could end up wasting energy if you have your AC cranking out cold air when it doesn’t need to.

Every Year

There is one task that should only need performing once a year.

This is one of the most important, however.

Professional Maintenance

Once a year, you should get a professional to come and give your AC system a once over.

It’s far better to find and fix any problems before they become a major issue.

If you wait until your system breaks down, it may be too late to repair it and leave you needing an air conditioner replacement.
